Summary
Plan International Nigeria is currently requesting fur application for a Gender consultant to facilitate a gender assessment to provide more in-depth contextualized qualitative baseline data on the underlying causes relating to MNCH issues and experience of women, men, and boys and girls’realities in MNCH.
This assessment will capture:
Perceptions of women/girls and men/boys regarding their involvement in MNCH decision-making.
Differences between the roles and responsibilities of women and men and boys/girls.
Differences in their access to and control of resources,
Power dynamics between men/women, boys/girls and differences in practical needs and strategic interest.
Household, community and health facility level barriers/constraints they face in accessing and utilizing MNCH services.
The gender assessment is expected to compliment the baseline assessment being conducted for both projects that has already incorporated a gendered perspective using sex and age dis aggregated data where appropriate and specific gender equality (GE) questions in the different baseline tools such as in the household(HH)survey and health facility assessment.
The assessment will be guided but not limited by an analytical framework that hat key parameters and lines of exploration. This assessment’s findings and recommendations will serve to enable project staff and partners to refine and adapt project interventions’ effective response to the realities and needs of male/female target beneficiaries. It will also serve as aan ongoing learning and monitoring tool to better understand the progress in gender equality in relation to meeting the project’s health objectives.
Scope of Work
Translate FGD/Kll tools provided by Plan into appropriate language.
Finalize research sites, sampling and field work logistics (approximately 3-4 FGDs per 3-4 sites and KIIs) as per guidance of Plan International Nigeria and Plan Canada.
Training/orientation by Plan International Nigeria on FGD/KII tools/approach including pilot testing for team members including facilitator and note-taker.
Finalize/adjust FGD/KII tools.
Carry out primary data collection as per defined sites and samples,
Transcribe/Write up data
Input data into software (NVivo preferably or at the very least in excel).
Data validation/verification for completeness and consistency and approval by Plan
Transfer of all data and materials to Plan.
Requirements
Demonstrated minimum 5-10 years of experience in administering participatory qualitative research methods/approaches, especially for gender assessments/analyses/evaluations, preferably for international non-profit organizations, or bilateral, multilateral agencies
Experience analyzing qualitative data (ex. With Excel, Nvivo)
Knowledge of gender issues and women’s/girls’ empowerment issues in Nigeria would be an advantage:
Knowledge/experience of health sector issues, particularly relating to maternal and newborn child health would be an added advantage
Fluency in English and national/local languages.
Ability to work as team player.
